This is a mid-century, one of a kind, Moroccan Beni M’Guild rug, handmade by the women of the Beni M’Guild tribe located in the Atlas mountains. The rug is reversible with a long, heavy pile wool on one side and a flat woven surface on the opposite side. Woven of hand spun wool and dyed with deep bold colors of indigo, magenta, and egg yolk which create an asymmetrical shadow pattern.

In the Berber tradition, the color blue represents wisdom; green symbolizes peace; red represents strength; and yellow symbolizes eternity.

Please note this is a vintage Moroccan rug that has had a long, storied life. Expect signs of wear, repairs or fading. A bit of shedding is normal. The beauty is in its imperfections.

Description

Vintage Moroccan Beni M’Guild Rugs were handwoven by the women of Beni M’Guild tribe. This soft, blue shaded wool rug was made with a long heavy pile. Due to the harsh climate of the Middle Atlas Mountains, the thick rugs were used as warm bedding, sleeping mats, and floor covering. One-of-a-kind handmade, Beni M’Guild rugs are often woven to be reversible with a long pile on one side and flat surface on the opposite side.

Weaving rugs is one of the oldest Moroccan traditions and it is truly an art form. Each rug tells a unique story told by the weaver using specific symbols or colors. The techniques and symbols used by the weaver were passed down generation to generation. While the rugs were used to protect the body from the elements they were also meant to protect the spirit from negative energy.

CARE

Shake or beat your vintage Moroccan Beni rug outside weekly and once a year leave it drink in the sun for a day. Vacuum using the hand attachment to prevent damage to the knots and wool fibers. Flip the rug and vacuum the opposite side every other month. Professionally washing is recommended, but avoid dry cleaning or steaming.
